In Bible study one time, the pastor asked those in attendance, “What one verse from the Bible sums up the very core of what Lutherans believe?” Silence… then someone boldly pipes up with an answer: “John 3:16.” “Well, that’s part of it,” was the pastor’s reply. More silence. Some other answers were given — John 15:13, John 14:16, Mark 12:30-31. “All good answers, and they’re all part of it,” the pastor probed, and I quickly realized that I had no clue what verse he was looking for. So I’ll never forget when one gentleman spoke up from the back of the room: “Ephesians 2:8-9.” “Yes!” replied the pastor. “For it is by grace you have been saved — and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.” God is good, and His gift of salvation is free for those who will only receive it! Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost!
